Job Description

Melvic Steel Framing Pty Ltd is seeking a qualified and experienced Fabrication Welder to join our team in Pakenham, Victoria. The successful candidate will be responsible for carrying out TIG and MIG welding, metal fabrication and assembly work across a range of steel-framing and construction projects.

The role involves working with mild steel, stainless steel and aluminium components in accordance with technical drawings, measurements and fabrication specifications. The ideal candidate will have strong practical welding and fabrication skills, excellent attention to detail and a commitment to producing accurate, high-quality work while maintaining a safe and efficient workshop environment.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform TIG and MIG welding on mild steel, stainless steel and aluminium components.
  • Fabricate steel frames, brackets, structural components and other metal products in accordance with project specifications.
  • Read and interpret technical drawings, fabrication plans, measurements and specifications.
  • Cut, bend, shape, fit and assemble metal components using appropriate machinery, welding equipment and hand tools.
  • Position, align and secure components using jigs, clamps and measuring equipment prior to welding.
  • Inspect completed welds and fabricated components to ensure accuracy, strength and quality.
  • Identify welding defects, fabrication issues or dimensional inconsistencies and carry out necessary repairs or adjustments.
  • Safely operate workshop machinery, cutting equipment, grinders, welding machines and related tools.
  • Maintain tools, machinery and work areas in a clean, safe and serviceable condition.
  • Follow company procedures, applicable Australian Standards and Workplace Health and Safety requirements.
  • Work independently and collaboratively with team members to meet production schedules and project deadlines.
  • Assist with general fabrication and workshop duties as required.
Skills and Experience
  • Previous experience as a Fabrication Welder, Metal Fabricator or in a similar fabrication role.
  • Demonstrated practical experience in TIG and MIG welding.
  • Experience working with mild steel, stainless steel and aluminium.
  • Ability to accurately read and interpret technical drawings, measurements and fabrication specifications.
  • Experience in cutting, bending, fitting, shaping and assembling metal components.
  • Strong understanding of welding quality, finishing and inspection requirements.
  • Competence in safely operating workshop machinery, welding equipment and hand tools.
  • Strong attention to detail with a commitment to producing accurate and high-quality weld finishes.
  • Good problem-solving, time-management and organisational skills.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a production team.
  • Sound knowledge of WHS requirements and safe workshop practices.
Qualifications
  • Certificate III in Engineering – Fabrication Trade or an equivalent relevant qualification.
  • Certificate IV in Engineering or Fabrication will be highly regarded.
  • Relevant welding tickets, licences or industry certifications will be advantageous.
  • Relevant industry experience may also be considered where supported by demonstrated welding and fabrication skills.
