Job Description

The Bookkeeper is responsible for maintaining complete and accurate financial records for Smart Bookkeepers' Cairns-based clients, ensuring compliance with Australian bookkeeping and BAS agent standards, and providing high-quality financial administration services using cloud-based accounting platforms.


Key Duties and Responsibilities
  • Maintain complete sets of financial accounts and records for multiple SME clients using Xero, QuickBooks Online and MYOB
  • Record and categorise income and expenditure transactions accurately and in a timely manner
  • Perform regular bank reconciliations and capital account reconciliations
  • Process accounts payable and receivable, including coding, entry, and payment scheduling
  • Prepare and review Business Activity Statements (BAS) for lodgement by the Registered Tax Agent
  • Process payroll data and support STP (Single Touch Payroll) and superannuation compliance
  • Prepare financial reports including profit & loss statements, balance sheets, and cash flow summaries for client review
  • Conduct EOFY clean-up and file preparation for tax return lodgement
  • Liaise directly with Cairns-based clients on routine financial administration queries
  • Maintain organised and accurate client filing systems (cloud-based: Dropbox, Google Drive, OneDrive)
  • Supervise and review work of the Accounts Clerk (once appointed)
  • Participate in weekly online team meetings and ongoing professional development
Required Skills, Qualifications and Experience
  • Certificate IV in Bookkeeping or Accounting (or equivalent qualification or work experience as per ANZSCO Skill Level 3)
  • Minimum 2 years' relevant full-time bookkeeping experience
  • Proficiency in Xero (certification preferred), QuickBooks Online, and/or MYOB
  • Understanding of Australian GST, BAS, and payroll legislation
  • Strong attention to detail and organisational skills
  • Effective communication skills for client-facing role
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple client files concurrently
