About This Role
- Check food quality by examining ingredients, tasting, and adjusting seasoning and consistency before service.
Operate cooking equipment safely and effectively, including tandoors, fryers, ovens, and grills. - Prepare, cook, and present authentic Indian dishes including curries, tandoori items, biryanis, breads, and vegetarian specialties in accordance with Indian Room’s standards.
- Cook and prepare dishes using traditional Indian methods such as tandoor cooking, spice blending, marination, and slow-cooking techniques.
- Ensure all meals are prepared consistently, maintaining correct portion sizes, flavour balance, and presentation standards.
- Store and preserve sauces, spice mixes, and pre-prepared items according to quality and safety guidelines.
- Assist with ordering, receiving, and storing ingredients and supplies to maintain stock levels and freshness.
- Assist in planning and preparing daily menus under the direction of senior chefs, incorporating seasonal produce and customer preferences.
- Maintain cleanliness, organisation, and hygiene in all food preparation and storage areas, following Queensland hospitality and food safety standards.
- Monitor wastage, use ingredients efficiently, and support the team in achieving cost-effective kitchen operations.
- Follow instructions from senior kitchen staff and management to ensure smooth workflow during busy service periods.
- Assist in training and guiding junior kitchen staff in food preparation and safe working procedures.

Qualifications & Experience
- Certificate III or IV or diploma in Commercial Cookery or equivalent qualification.
- At least 1 year of relevant experience preparing Indian cuisine in a commercial kitchen.
- Sound knowledge of Indian ingredients, regional dishes, and cooking styles.
- Ability to follow recipes accurately and maintain consistency in quality and taste.
- Understanding of safe food handling and hygiene practices.
- Strong teamwork and communication skills.
- Willingness to work flexible hours, including weekends and public holidays.
- Positive attitude, reliability, and ability to perform under pressure.
